Working full-time with LAM

Living with LAM: Berenice

I found out about my LAM just one year after graduating from university with a degree in architecture, one year after having moved to a home 900 km from my place of origin. A year before my diagnosis, I left home with the dream of becoming a professional. I was in the best stage of my life and worked in a prestigious office within the architectural world.

When I found out I had LAM, there was little information and unfavorable expectations. Just when I felt I had the entire world in my favor, I received this news that took me three years to process. I feared I would have to detach myself from what I truly love: designing living spaces for individuals and friendly spaces within our city.

Nevertheless, I discovered the formula so that LAM could accompany me in my life without ruining it entirely. I could say that LAM was my incentive to live every moment as if there is no tomorrow, to try to be a better person every day and to leave my fingerprints in every accomplishment that I achieve. (I actually, project, design and direct the construction of projects!)

This formula to continue doing what I love, without feeling fully affected by LAM, includes finding a place to live closer to my work and to try to use less public transportation, on long trips, so I won’t feel exhausted. I try to combine my office time and my field time, as to conserve more energy. The fact that my boss knows about my LAM is also liberating!

Realistically, my work is my motivation for not feeling the full impact of this illness!

Berenice was diagnosed with lymphangioleiomyomatosis in 2014 at 23 years of age. She is from the state of Durango, Dgo Mexico but she currently resides in Mexico City.

Berenice originally wrote her submission in Spanish, so we wanted to include that as well. Many thanks to Maria (another LAM sister featured in this project) for helping with the translation.
